(The Wrath of Khan poster)」是延續「星際爭霸戰(TOS)」其中一集的劇情。

It is the 23rd century and a female Vulcan Starfleet officer is in command of the starship Enterprise. While the senior crew work at their posts on the bridge, the Vulcan officer, Saavik, makes a log entry.

"Captain's log, stardate 8130.3. Starship Enterprise on training mission to Gamma Hydra. Section 14, coordinates 22-87-4. Approaching Neutral Zone, all systems normal and functioning."

When Lieutenant Commander Sulu reports that the ship is entering Section 15, Saavik orders him to project a parabolic course in order to avoid the Neutral Zone. At her station, Uhura receives a distress call from the Kobayashi Maru, a fuel carrier which has struck a gravitic mine in close proximity to Altair VI. As the signal begins to break up, the captain of the damaged vessel reveals that his ship is in the neutral zone. Even with Sulu's reluctance to enter the zone, Saavik orders the helm officer to set an intercept course. When Spock informs her that Enterprise is now in violation of treaty, Saavik contacts the transporter room and asks for preparations to be made for retrieving the survivors. Uhura loses the distress signal and the computer reports the arrival of three Klingon cruisers. Saavik orders the crew to man battlestations and to raise the shields. Although Uhura attempts to notify the Klingon vessels that Enterprise is on a rescue mission, the crews on the ships are jamming all communication channels. The enemy ships fire photon torpedoes, heavily damaging the Enterprise and killing the crew, including Spock.

Eventually, Saavik orders the launch of Enterprise's log buoy and escape pods, which will carry the surviving crew away from the starship. From an unseen source, the filtered voice of Admiral Kirk is heard. The viewscreen of the "bridge" slides across, revealing a lighted room beyond. After Kirk strides through the opening, Saavik asks him for advice. The admiral replies that prayer would be the best course of action, as Klingons don't take prisoners. Standing up, Spock orders the trainees to the briefing room and leaves with the cadets. Saavik argues that the simulation was not a fair test of her command abilities, because there was no way to win. However, Kirk replies that a no-win situation is one which every captain may face and that the way in which someone deals with death is equally as important as how they face life. These thoughts didn't occur to Saavik, who says she will now spend time thinking about them. Dr. McCoy suggests that an experienced crew may serve more efficiently on the Enterprise but Kirk retorts that "galloping around the cosmos is a game for the young". Offended by the admiral's comment, Uhura indicates her displeasure.

Outside the bridge simulator, Spock is waiting for Kirk's approval of the trainee cadets. When the admiral comments that the cadets destroyed the simulator room, Spock reminds him that the Kobayashi Maru scenario frequently results in such a situation - noting that Kirk took the test three times, his final solution being somewhat "unique". The admiral thanks Spock for an antique written copy of "A Tale of Two Cities", which the Vulcan had given to Kirk as a birthday gift. They hear a voice report that a shuttle which is waiting for Spock will leave for Enterprise - the real Enterprise - in 15 minutes, prior to Kirk's inspection later. Kirk says he is returning home and enters a turbolift.

In Kirk's quarters on Earth, Dr. McCoy arrives and presents a bottle of Romulan ale to the admiral as a birthday gift. When Kirk comments that the drink is illegal in Federation space, McCoy replies that he only uses it for medicinal purposes. With difficulty, the captain reads a label on the bottle and realizes the drink is from 2283, two years ago. McCoy explains that Romulan ale takes a long time to ferment and, taking the bottle from Kirk, pours the drink into two beer mugs. Meanwhile, Kirk opens another of Dr. McCoy's gifts - a pair of antique 18th century gold-rimmed eye-glasses. Kirk has an allergy to Retinax V - the treatment McCoy would normally prescribe for the captain's eye condition - so McCoy gave him a pair of spectacles, instead. Together, they drink from the beer mugs, Kirk discovering that Romulan ale is a potent beverage. Lost for words, the captain wonders what he should say. When McCoy suggests "thank you", Kirk repeats the phrase. As they continue to drink the ale, McCoy attempts to persuade Kirk to get back into a command position aboard a starship.

A planet in the Ceti Alpha system

A planet in the Ceti Alpha system

Meanwhile, Commander Chekov is on board the USS Reliant. As the vessel heads toward a planet in the Ceti Alpha star system, the commander makes a log entry.

"Starship log, stardate 8130.4. Log entry by First Officer Pavel Chekov. Starship Reliant on orbital approach to Ceti Alpha VI, in connection with Project Genesis. We are continuing our search for a lifeless planet, to satisfy the requirements of a test site for the Genesis experiment. So far, no success."

Captain Clark Terrell orders the helm officer to maneuver the Reliant into a standard orbit of the planet and Mister Beach reports on the results of the surface scan. Ceti Alpha VI has a limited atmosphere, dominated by craylon gas, sand and high velocity winds - in short, it is incapable of supporting lifeforms. Chekov fears that the planet may not pass the requirements for the Genesis experiment. He explains that the Reliant has detected a minor energy flux reading on one dynoscanner, which could indicate the presence of life. When Terrell suggests that the scanner may be out of adjustment, Chekov theorizes that the energy flux could simply be a particle of preanimate matter. The captain orders Commander Kyle to contact Dr. Carol Marcus, the inventor of Project Genesis, using the comm-pic. Perhaps the source of the energy flux is something that can be transplanted off the planet. However, Chekov believes that Marcus' response is inevitable.

Regula I, in orbit of Regula

Regula I, in orbit of Regula

Near the Mutara Nebula, the space station Regula I slowly continues its orbit of Regula, a barren planetoid. Aboard the station, Carol Marcus is inquisitively wary. She warns Chekov and Captain Terrell that if even a microbe is found on the surface of the planet, Reliant will have to continue its search. When she cautiously permits an away team from the starship to beam down, Terrell enthusiastically interrupts, indicating that he and Chekov will go. Carol Marcus gazes at her son, David, who deactivates the Com-pic.

Walking through a corridor, David assures his mother that Project Genesis will be successful. He tells her not to worry and opines that she will be remembered in the same breath as Newton, Einstein and Surak. Carol Marcus reacts with mock outrage at her son's supposedly disrespectful comment. As they stop walking, David asks his mother if she will team up with him for a game of bridge following their dinner. After she gives an indefinite answer, Carol Marcus sees that something is bothering her son. David reveals that he feels nervous every time the crew of Regula I become involved with Starfleet. He fears that Project Genesis could be used as a weapon of mass destruction, killing life rather than creating it. Recalling an "overgrown boy scout" that his mother once knew, David begins to say something before Carol Marcus interrupts him. She maintains that James Kirk was never a "boy scout" and walks into another room.

As the starship Reliant continues its orbit of a planet in the Ceti Alpha system, Captain Terrell and Commander Chekov beam down to the planet's surface. Upon arrival, fighting through the clouds of dust blowing across the surface, Captain Terrell comments that he "can't see a thing in this dust" to which Chekov replies, "This is the garden spot of Ceti Alpha VI". Soon after, they discover and enter what seems to be a crashed derelict vessel. Upon investigation, however, it is revealed that the "derelict" is none other than the SS Botany Bay, a ship Chekov remembers all too well. Panicking, he rushes Terrell toward the exit....

On board the Reliant, Commander Kyle is attempting to contact either his Captain, or Chekov, with limited success. On the planet below, however, a scene far sinister than Terrell and Chekov could expect is unfolding. After they are bustled back into the interior of the crashed Botany Bay, their captor reveals himself... as none other than the late 20th century genetically engineered criminal genius, Khan Noonien Singh. Remarking to Terrell simply, "I don't know you," Khan moves on to Chekov, whom he remembers from his short time spent aboard the Enterprise in 2267. It only takes a few seconds for him to retrieve Chekov's name from the depths of his memory. After questioning Terrell and Chekov for several minutes as to why they are present on the planet, also "enlightening" the Captain as to his history regarding Chekov (his story is rather twisted from the truth, evidence of his irrational vendetta against James T. Kirk), it is revealed that they beamed down to the planet believing it to be Ceti Alpha VI, a fact which causes Khan to temporarily fly into a rage, screaming "This is Ceti Alpha V!" Khan then inserts juvenile Ceti eels into their ears in order to render them subservient to his every command. Afterward, he calmly asks them, "Now tell me, why are you here? And where can I find James Kirk?"

Commander Chekov lures Admiral Kirk to Regula I by telling Carol Marcus that Kirk has ordered them to give the Reliant the Genesis Device. Naturally she immediately contacts the Admiral, but the connection is so bad her messages fades out and Kirk has no choice but to go to Regula.

When the Enterprise arrives at Regula, they find the Reliant waiting for them. Thinking the other Federation vessel is friendly, Kirk is reticent to raise his shields, which proves to be a tactical mistake. The Reliant opens fire on the Enterprise's engine room, sending the trainees scurrying for cover. The Enterprise returns fire, but the damage is done. Main power is down, weapons barely functioning, and Khan himself is on the viewscreen, demanding Kirk's surrender. Admiral Kirk delays Khan long enough to use get the Reliant's command codes to drop her shields. Quickly the Enterprise damages the Reliant and takes off for cover from the Regula asteroid.

Upon arriving at the Regula I station, Kirk and the away team find that no one is left alive. As they are dragging the bodies out of hiding, they find Chekov and Captain Terrell inside a compartment. The two relate the horrible story of finding Khan and their subsquent infestation.

Exploring the station leads the away team to a transporter that had recently been activated. Checking the coordinates, Kirk realizes they beamed into the Regula asteroid and follows, finding himself and the team inside a chamber. There is the Genesis Device, but before Kirk can move, he is attacked by none other than his son, David Marcus, who accuses Kirk of trying to steal the Genesis Device. His mother, Dr. Marcus, tells David that "of course he didn't", referring to Kirk.

Captain Terrell gives into Khan's commands and tries to attack Kirk after giving Khan the Genesis Device, but the worm has finally made him unhinge, and he turns his phaser on himself. Chekov tries to complete Khan's request now, but collapses, and the worm crawls out of his ear where it's immediately burned up by Kirk's weapon. Khan is shocked to hear Kirk yelling at him on the communicator, and Khan vows to leave him on Regula as he "left her" - his wife. Kirk, screams at him, "KHHHHHAAAAAANNN!!", and breaks contact.

Carol Marcus explains the Starfleet Corps of Engineerings spent 18 months digging out the asteroid, and the smaller Genesis Device filled the cave with a stable ecosystem in days. They have enough food there to survive the rest of their lives as long as the Reliant doesn't find them.

Kirk contacts the Enterprise to find that it will be literally days before transporters, weapons, shields, and even warp drive will be repaired. He instructs the Enterprise to leave and warn Starfleet if they can't repair the transporters in time. Unknown to them it seems, Kahn is listening in.

After a mere two hours, he contacts the Enterprise again and is of course completely unsurprised to know that transporters are back, minimal shields, weapons, and even impulse drive. He explains to a surprised Saavik as they transport aboard, that when enemy is monitoring communications, you always speak in code. Hours become days, days become weeks, weeks turn into months.

Unfortunately, the Enterprise can't outrun the far less damaged Reliant, so Kirk takes refuge in the nearby Mutara Nebula, whose ionized gases disrupt shields, targeting scanners, and the viewscreen. The Reliant pursues, and quickly it becomes a game of cat-and-mouse, with each ship sniping at each other but missing.

As Kirk is watching the viewscreen, waiting to see the Reliant, in front of the ship appears a shape - it's the Reliant! He orders the Enterprise to turn out of the way, but again he's just a step behind - the enemy opens fire, blowing up one of the Enterprise's photon torpedo bays. Firing phasers does very little, and the Enterprise limps away yet again, even worse off - warp drive is down again. The engine room is flooded with radiation, as a barely conscious Scotty warns Kirk before collapsing.

Spock notices that despite Khan's intelligence, he's not used to fighting in 3 dimensions - X, Y, and Z. Kirk realizes the implications and orders Sulu to take the Enterprise below and then behind the Reliant. Now in the prime positon, Kirk orders Chekov to fire! The first shot blows up the torpedo bays and the second destroys their right nacelle. The Reliant, now crippled, crawls away trailing plasma. On the Reliant's bridge, Khan watches as his crew dies around him. He himself is badly injured, his hand and face burned from plasma fires.

Kirk contacts Khan and demands his surrender, but Khan will have nothing to do with that. If he can't have Genesis, then no one will, and better that Kirk die with him than get away. He sets off a cascade in the Genesis Device, but the Enterprise can't escape; the engine room is flooded and the warp drive is down. Spock slips out of the bridge, unnoticed. Kirk orders the Enterprise to flee with the "best possible speed.", to which Khan watches with satisfaction. "No, Kirk, you can't get away. From hell's heart...I stab at thee. For hate's sake I spit my last breath...at thee." As he finishes, he slumps to the deck and dies, never seeing the Enterprise get away.

In the engine room, McCoy stops Spock from entering, saying "No human can survive in there!", to which Spock replies, "As you are so fond of pointing out, Doctor, I am not human." Still, McCoy refuses to let Spock in, so he incapacitates him, telling him he doesn't have time to argue and transfers to him his katra. He knows that even though he's not human, the radiation will eventually kill him. This is his sacrifice to save the crew, as the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

On the bridge, Sulu exlaims the warp drive is back, full power, and Kirk thanks Scotty before telling Sulu to "go!" The Enterprise streaks away just as the Genesis Device explodes, creating the Genesis Planet behind them in a beautiful explosion that nearly catches up with the ship.

McCoy, who has woken up, contacts the bridge and tells Kirk to get down there. Before he even goes, he sees the empty science station chair and knows what happened...

Kirk sees Spock in the engine room, disfigured, and dying of radiation poisioning, but McCoy and Scotty won't let him enter the room as "he's dead already." Kirk calls Spock's name and realizes when he turns, that Spock is now blinded. He follows the dying Vulcan around the side of the glass, finally resting against it, unable to believe Spock is in there, dying.

Spock tries to explain to Kirk his reasons: "Don't grieve, Admiral...it's logical...the needs... of the many...outweigh-", to which Kirk replies, "The needs of the few", and Spock nods. "Or the one..."

Kirk, choked up with grief, can't reply. "I have been...and will continue to be...your friend. Live long...and prosper." He holds out his hand, in the tradional Vulcan way, and Kirk presses his hand up to the glass as well, watching as Spock slumps to the floor, dead. It takes all of his resolve to keep his composure as he sees his closest friend die in front of him. This time there is no going back.

Spocks funeral is held later, on the torpedo deck. Kirk takes a moment to figure out what to say, what would befit Spock, and finally settles on, "Out of all the souls I've encountered in my travels, his is the most...human." Spock's body, encased in a torpedo tube, is sent out into space and lands on the Genesis Planet in a fitting end.

Background Information

Publicity shot of the Enterprise
  • Working titles included: The War of The Generations (Bennett's original two-page outline), The Omega Syndrome, The Genesis Project, Worlds That Never Were (this script by Peeples totally discarded the Khan character and plot and involved two aliens from an alternate dimension) The Undiscovered Country, The Vengeance of Khan.
  • Several items were cut from the original script draft, including the revelation that Saavik was of joint Vulcan and Romulan lineage (something picked up by the Pocket TOS series of novels, including "The Pandora Principle"), and a relationship between Saavik and David Marcus. Both remained in the novelization.
  • Cadet Peter Preston's relation as nephew to Scotty was removed from the theatrical release, but was included in a televised version broadcast by ABC. The scene was restored in the Special Edition DVD release.
  • Leonard Nimoy had intended Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan to be his final appearance as Spock, however, Harve Bennett suggested the "Remember" sequence as a possible get-out clause, should Nimoy decide to return to the role.
  • This is the first apparance of the red jacket uniform.
  • Many of the outer space scenes in the first half of the movie are reused from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. These include the Klingon battlecruisers in the Kobayashi Maru sequence, the Enterprise's departure from drydock and footage of her going to warp.
  • Khan's remark to Chekov, "I never forget a face," is somewhat ironic, since Khan's appearance in TOS: "Space Seed" was in the first season... and Chekov did not make his first appearance until TOS' second season. It is possible, however, that Chekov was on the Enterprise at the time and Khan had seen him offscreen. In fact, as noted on the Special Edition DVD's text commentary, Walter Koenig often joked (at conventions and in interviews) that his character had made Khan wait overly long to use a bathroom on Khan's visit to the Enterprise and that was why Khan remembered his face so well.
  • At a high level the characters of Khan and Kirk can be seen, respectively, as Captain Ahab and the great white whale from the novel Moby Dick (which was found among Khan's possessions). Khan quoted several lines from the novel almost exactly (even down to his dying curse). The ambiguous allegorical nature of the novel was not reproduced in the film, however.
  • The film earned $14,347,221 at the US box office in its opening weekend, a record at the time.
