进取号一回到地球, 疲惫的船员们就要面对曾经的旅程带给他们的影响, 既有积极的也有消极的.

剧情

舰队在旧金山为企业NX-01号船员接风洗尘，亚契发言向牺牲的27名船员致敬，感慨归家的感觉真好。稍后他在一家酒吧邂逅以前的女友Erika Hernandez，得知她已被任为哥伦比亚NX-02号的舰长，并接受邀请登船参观。第二天，Soval大使在简报会上对亚契发难，追问他在神域里为什么没有就拯救Seleya号的瓦肯船员做出更多努力。亚契忍无可忍当场发火，佛瑞斯特上将打圆场宣布简报会就此结束，命令亚契去度假，Hernandez毛遂自荐和他一起去登山。

特珀邀请塔克和自己一起回瓦肯星，笨拙地把她介绍给母亲T'Les。她妈妈扬起眉毛: 女儿竟然带同僚回家了。T'Les已经不再在瓦肯科学学院任教，她不赞成人类子女看重自己意愿甚于家庭的需要，令女儿尽快和未婚夫Koss成婚。塔克为给特珀家人好印象，帮忙修理食物合成机。他朝T'Les承认自己和特珀正在谈恋爱，但T'Les告诉特珀人类和瓦肯人结合不会有好日子过。然后Koss驾临向特珀求婚，计划举行传统婚礼，承诺婚后他会帮助她妈妈重新获得地位。

李德、梅伟瑟和伏拉士在酒吧碰到一个排外者蓄意挑衅，威胁伏拉士直到引起他Denobula族防卫反应本能，整张脸膨胀起来吓跑了闹事者。这起事故让伏拉士难以平静，稍后谢绝和佐藤一道赴宴，对她说人类可能需要经过一段时间，才会认识到并非每个异星人都妄图要轰爆地球的。佐藤答应给他带外卖回来。

亚契作噩梦遇到Xindi人袭击，受Hernandez一番抚慰后说出心里: 他一直有怀疑自己在神域里做出的决定，现在他是不是故意在回避想到那些事情。Hernandez安慰亚契他只是做了任何一位好舰长都会做的决定，亚契笑言她令他想起自己过去是多么热心于探索。既然他不再是她的上级，两人又孤男寡女远离星际舰队呆在这深山老林里，他们没有什么理由不可以亲密。回到简报会上，Soval坦称亚契的措施在道德上仍须商榷，但都是必须的，因为进取号船员不仅拯救了地球，也拯救了瓦肯星。Soval对亚契表示感谢。

T'Les向特珀说出真情，原来她失去职位是因为被指控为间谍，帮助特珀和星际舰队破坏P'Jem修道院里的军事基地。特珀告诉塔克她决定和Koss结婚。对此塔克非常伤心，以致穿礼服的时候连反对两人拍拖的T'Les也关切地问他有没有对自己的女儿表白爱意。T'Les认为婚礼前特珀有权利知道一切，但塔克感到特珀已经承受太多压力，不愿把事态进一步复杂化。因此他选择了保持沉默，站在挚爱之人身旁注视她和Koss跪在一位神父面前接受祝福:“汝等即将见证……”

背景信息

The xenophobic Humans seen in this episode seem similar to the many Americans who, after the World Trade Center bombings of 9/11/2001, mistakenly blamed all Muslims, or anyone who's skin was darker and appeared to them as possibly from the Middle East. The series would return to the theme of xenophobic Humans in the episodes, "Demons" and "Terra Prime".

This is the first time since the final episode of Voyager that a female captain has appeared on Star Trek.

Joanna Cassidy, who plays T'Les in this episode, originally auditioned to play the role of Voyager's captain, Kathryn Janeway.

On the bridge of the starship Columbia, Captain Archer mentions a Commander Jefferies. The remark is a reference to the Season 2 episode, "First Flight", in which it was first mentioned that Jefferies is a major contributor to starship design, and Commander Tucker is a member of his team. Both lines of dialogue are also homages to Matt Jefferies, who designed the Constitution-class starship Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series.

This episode features both the first appearance of the planet Vulcan on Star Trek: Enterprise and the first glimpse of Vulcan cities in Star Trek.

Episode writer Mike Sussman had hoped to finally establish in dialogue that the planet Vulcan orbits 40 Eridani, a long-held supposition among Star Trek fans (Gene Roddenberry himself was said to have endorsed the idea). The closest Sussman was able to come to this was Tucker's line to T'Pol: "You brought me sixteen light years just to watch you get married to someone you barely know." (40 Eridani is approximately 16 light-years from Earth). Curiously, Sussman's production entity is named "40 Eridani."

This is the first, and only, time that Phlox puffs up his face like a blowfish, an instictive defense mechanism to ward off danger.

While Archer and Captain Hernandez are rock-climbing, Archer points out a star in evening sky, around which orbits the first Class M planet his crew visited (as chronicled in the Season 1 episode, "Strange New World").
