进取号发现了一艘废弃的飞船, 里面都是看起来用作实验的尸体.

剧情

船员们开始更熟悉彼此和他们的新船. 舰长给Malcolm 一段时间进行"射击练习" 以调整鱼雷瞄准系统. 看起来不会发生什么有趣的事情直到他们遇到一艘外星飞船.

开始那艘船对呼叫没有任何回应. 没过多久一场关于瓦肯人做事的方式的争辩发生了，T'Pol强烈建议他们不要管，而舰长却很渴望和新种族进行第一次接触. 扫描那艘船后T'Pol 认为外星人不想进行接触, 而 Archer 则解释为外星人目前不能进行接触. 在船壳外部发现了战斗的痕迹以后, 舰长派出了一个外遣队, 结果发现那艘船的船员都被杀害了而且尸体正在被加工, 暗示着杀手很快就会回来.

在一开始同意T'Pol的建议离开以后, Archer最终决定遵从"人类的行为准则" 返回作充分的调查. 最终他们启动了那艘船的通讯系统并发出了一个求救信号. 不久之后, 一艘船退出了曲速, 扫描对它没有效果，还没有校准的武器瞄准系统也没能阻止它, 它攻击了进取号的引擎. 接着另一艘船也出现了. 他们是和那些尸体属于同一个种族. 由于语言交流困难, 最后Hoshi 不得不不用翻译器直接进行交流, 那些外星人终于明白进取号只是来帮忙的. 然后他们攻击了那艘敌舰, 最后消灭了它. 最后星际舰队又赢得了一个朋友.

背景信息

This is episode is one of the few episodes – if not the only episode – to contain the melody from the series' main title "Faith of the Heart" in the episode score.

This is the first appearance of the Axanar, a species mentioned twice before on the original series (TOS: "Court Martial", "Whom Gods Destroy"). They would be seen only once more, in the form of a corpse in the second season episode "Dead Stop".

This is also the first episode to feature EV suits: costumes created only for the series' regulars that would be seen through the run of Enterprise.
