在请求庇护登上摩亚后，克瑞斯偷了巨兽幼子泰利。由于对摩亚船员们的恐惧，泰利认可了他的新船长，带着克瑞斯消失了踪迹。天蝎掌控了指挥航母，摩亚和她的船员们深入未知区域，逃避天蝎的追击。

在他们的旅途中，凯恩娜和迪阿国的关系变得亲密起来，与此同时克莱顿和艾瑞也在他们复杂的情感中挣扎。一次他们造访了一个皇室行星——一些叛逃塞巴辛人殖民地的首都。船员们遭遇了Scarran人，一个残酷而强大的种族，他们正在与和平卫士进行军备竞赛。Scarran人获知天蝎对克莱顿有兴趣，于是抓了他来研究他的价值。讽刺的是，克莱顿所不知的天蝎的神经芯片却让他保住了心智健全和他的命。

尽管克莱顿仍然不知道神经芯片的事，他渐渐意识到头脑里有什么东西很不对劲。他开始看到天蝎的幻觉，并且日益频繁和真实，感到受迫服从于幻象。最后，尽管他仍然不知道原因，但在他最需要清醒的头脑时，却发现自己正处于失去自我控制的危险边缘...

船员们尝试营救迪阿国失散已久被奴役的儿子Jothee，但他们每次尝试总是遇到天灾。克莱顿瞒着大家用自己向天蝎换取了Jothee的自由。被天蝎关押后，克莱顿知道了让他产生幻觉的神经芯片。船员们拼死在天蝎的魔爪下营救了克莱顿，但是让他彻底脱离这个和平卫士科学家的控制绝非易事。天蝎的克隆人格被灌输进神经芯片，控制了克莱顿的身体，强迫他杀死他所爱的艾瑞...

天蝎收回了载有宝贵数据的芯片，然后让克莱顿活了下来，毁了他大脑的语言中枢，让这个人类以遭受无声作为给他带来所有麻烦的代价...
