剧情

星聯的Stryis四號星上發生了嚴重的傳染病，企業號拜訪Ligon 二號 星，以求取預防傳染病所需的珍貴疫苗。Ligonian族族長Lutan 登上 企業號時，顯得十分傲慢自負，且對Tasha 有些迷戀，但不嚴重。遺 憾的是，他離艦時卻在企業號眾人的面前綁走了Tasha。


Data與Riker認為Lutan 將綁架Tasha當作是"光榮出擊"的表現，藉由 冒險的掠奪行為，向他的部屬證明自己非常勇敢。依照Ligonian族的 風俗，Picard必須在公開的宴會上請求對方釋回Tasha。Picard 照辦 了，但Lutan 卻說他無法放棄她，因而違背了自己族裡的風俗。他的 妻子Yareena於是憤而向Tasha挑戰，要求進行一場死亡決鬥。如果企 業號想取得疫苗，就得接受挑戰。隨著受疫星球上的疫情益形惡化， 企業號也得儘快取得疫苗。在Ligon星上，土地歸女人擁有。Lutan現 在處於一個穩賺不賠的情勢，如果Yareena 死了，他就可以繼承她所 有的土地，若Yareena 沒死，他則沒有任何損失。


企業號眾人試圖阻止這場決鬥，卻沒有用。最後眾人決定放棄外交手 段，改行詐術。Yar贏了這場決鬥，武器上的劇毒使得Yareena當場死 亡。兩人立即被傳輸上艦，在Beverly的救治之下，Yareena順利起死 回生。起死回生後，Yareena與Lutan之間的婚姻關係就解除了。她改 選他的副手Hagon當作新的丈夫。企業號帶著Tasha與疫苗離開。

背景信息

  • Michael Dorn (Worf) does not appear in this episode. This is his first non-appearance.
  • In this episode, the entire humanoid population of the planet is portrayed by African-American performers.
  • The ivory-like sticks the Ligonians use to show approval or to applaud are later seen again in "Frame of Mind", where an illusionary Tilonian inmate plays with them.
  • Characteristic white lamps, consisting of several tubes in different shapes are seen on Ligon II for the first time. They will later re-appear on many planets, like on Angel I, Risa or Cardassia.
  • In this episode, the floor of the holodeck is not yet covered by the familiar pattern of yellow stripes on black background, instead the floor is covered by grey carpet.
  • In a rare blooper, Doctor Crusher is seen wearing an antiquated wrist-watch when Yareena is beamed to the ship.
  • Special care was taken to include a Ligonian logo into many set pieces. The hexagonal shape consisting of 3 diagonal stripes and a small circle is seen on walls, doors, the vaccine box and the weapon boxes. The hexagonal shape is also echoed in the shape of doors, windows and the weapon wall in the large open courtyard.
  • The blue razor prop that Geordi used to shave was later seen, again as a razor, in (DS9: "The Sword of Kahless").
  • The Ligonian glavin appears in later episodes, slightly repainted, in Worf's quarters as a Klingon hand-weapon. (TNG: "Reunion", "Cost of Living")
  • The Ligonian gongs were later re-used in the Temple of Akadar. (TNG: "The Perfect Mate")
