剧集简介
故事的背景设定在公元2257年，人类已经突破光速，开始大规模星际旅行及在太阳系附近殖民，与多个外星文明接触并有贸易联系。一天，一艘地球联邦的星际驱逐舰在探索未知星际空间的时候遇到一艘不明星船，因为误判对方意图而先敌开火。对方叫明巴利外星族（Minbari），比人类早进化发展几千年，其技术人类无法望其项背。不巧的是地球星船孤注一掷先敌开火的时候把灰色議會議長杜哈的给干掉了（那位老兄其实知道按大设计蓝图，明巴利必须与地球人联合并融合，这次到这里也不是闲逛，而是准备与地球人第一次亲密接触）。于是明巴利对地球开战，摧枯拉朽所向披糜，在对地球本土最后一击的过程中，明巴利却突然停止进攻并宣布投降。总之，停战后地球出资在中立空间建设“巴比伦空间站"，致力星际交流、谈判及和平合作。前面四座都被摧毁或莫名其妙消失，于是有了巴比伦5号。巴5军头Sheridan和明巴利大使笛嵐（Delenn）带领众喽罗，联合火星殖民地抵抗力量反对地球联邦通过谋杀政变而上台的独裁总统，联合各外星文明反击神秘黑暗种类——影族（Shadows），向佛隆人（Vorlon）说不，最终走上独立自主自力更生的发展文明道路。

地球與明巴利的戰爭
西元2156年，星際勢力中的強權聖塔利共和（Centauri Public，名曰共和但實行帝制）首次與地球（Earth Alliance）接觸並進行貿易，聖塔利人十分喜歡地球的精巧飾品，願意以經貿的方式與地球保持關係，而地球透過貿易的方式取得超空間（Hyper space）航行技術與跳躍閘門（Jump Gate）的建造方式，從此，人類的活動範圍不在止於太陽系。 自從23世紀初期人類打贏了對迪加星（Dilgar）的戰爭以後，便積極擴充在星際間的殖民地與勢力範圍；2243年，年輕的藍道莫拉里（Londo Mollari）出任聖塔利共和派駐地球的大使，當時的地球聯盟軍方（EarthForce）高層對於另外一支神秘種族明巴利（Minbari）感到十分興趣，想要派遣探測艦隊前往明巴利領域邊界查看狀況，順便評估明巴利人對於人類擴充勢力範圍的反應。 莫拉里獲邀前往總部設在日內瓦的地球聯盟軍方總部與高層研商探測明巴利的對策，當時軍方的構想是派遣一支武裝探測艦隊前往明巴利的邊境一探究竟，並希望聖塔利政府能夠提供關於明巴利人的武力與邊境哨站配置，莫拉里則表示要探測明巴利人可以，只能派遣一艘船前去，再多便會被視為挑釁，並且苦口婆心的勸告軍方高層明巴利人對於經貿沒有興趣，明巴利是最早從事星際旅行的種族，即使我方（此指聖塔利）全力發展外交的同時也不敢輕忽；很遺憾的，自大而傲慢的人類並不聽勸，莫拉里離去前嚴重警告人類不要吵醒正在沉睡的巨龍（此指明巴利）。 在明巴利方面，騎警組織（An'la'Shok，即Ranger）雷納（Lennon）警覺到瓦倫神諭（Valen Prophecy）裡面敘述影族（Shadows）與黑暗勢力集結威脅的即將到來，前往灰色議會（Grey Council）向議長杜哈（Dukhot）力陳影族的威脅與恢復和佛隆人（Vorlon）聯盟的重要性，但卻遭到軍事局代表的譏諷與輕忽；最後，議長杜哈決定以灰色議會成員自組探險隊前往影族的母星札哈洞（Z'Ha'Dum）一探究竟。 2244年年底，地球聯盟軍方派遣以詹考斯基艦長（Captain Jankowski）指揮的普羅米休斯號（Prometheus）巡洋艦為首的武裝探測艦隊前往明巴利邊境進行軍事情報偵蒐，在完成最後一次的跳躍航行後，地球聯盟艦隊進入明巴利邊境；此時，前往札哈洞的明巴利艦隊也離開了最後一個邊區哨站，當時的明巴利戰艦上正在舉行灰色議會新成員笛嵐（Delenn）的入會儀式，由議長杜哈親自主持。 詹考斯基艦長發現明巴利艦隊的蹤影，而明巴利戰艦的人員也發現了地球聯盟的武裝探測艦隊，雙方相互偵測，但地球聯盟方面因為科技遠落後於明巴利，以至於無法鎖定明巴利人的船艦，詹考斯基艦長決定發出訊息：我們只是來進行探測的，我們並沒有惡意。同時，明巴利人也收到了這則通訊，但因為語言不通無法取得有效聯繫，因此明巴利軍方決定依照傳統，打開戰艦上所有的砲門，以示我方的軍容盛大與誠摯的待客禮儀，但是，詹考斯基卻誤會這項傳統儀式，認為這是明巴利人惡意而不友善的舉動，便決定先發制人。 這場因誤會而起的衝突造成了灰色議會議長杜哈的身亡，灰色議會頓時分裂成主戰與主和兩派，新成員笛嵐感於與杜哈的友誼與提攜，在悲傷與盛怒之下投下關鍵性的一票：追蹤敵方艦隊展開復仇聖戰。 這場戰爭自開打起，人類就一直處於絕對的劣勢，一場小小的勝利都沒有嚐過，此時，地球聯盟軍方深刻了解到兩件事情：第一，我們需要一場重大的勝利來激勵士氣以扭轉戰局；第二，要是無法有效反敗為勝，那人類只有走向滅絕一途。 唯一的一場勝仗是由約翰薛瑞登少校（Lt. Commander John Sheridan）所指揮的萊辛頓號（Lexinton）在小行星帶設下戰術熱核炸彈陷阱，以假的求救訊號引誘明巴利旗艦黑星號（Black Star）進入熱核炸彈引爆範圍而成功摧毀之。 也因為這場勝利的激勵，人類在這場戰爭苦撐了兩年之久，在 2247年底，明巴利人終於迫近人類的故鄉：地球。在最後的地球保衛絕戰的前夕，地球聯盟的總統號召全體人類共同為了人類的延續做最終的聖戰與奉獻，只要能夠多拖延敵方一分鐘，就會有更多的人們逃往中立區以延續人類的文明命脈。 人類組成史上前所未有的戰鬥隊伍進行這場殊死地球保衛戰，雙方在月球軌道附近形成慘烈的戰線（The Battle of the Line），人類整體還是居於挨打的地位；但是，就在明巴利艦隊即將勝利的前一刻，明巴利人突然宣佈投降，而這個突如其來的投降卻困擾整個宇宙長達十年之久。
巴比倫計劃的由来
“巴比倫計劃（Babylon Project）與巴比倫五號（Babylon 5）星站的由來 在地球與明巴利的戰爭結束之後，地球聯盟參議院做出了重大的決定：為了不再重蹈類似的錯誤，為了能夠學習和平的與星際間其他民族相處往來，地球聯盟參議院提出巴比倫計劃。巴比倫計劃提議在中立區域由地球出資建造一個太空站，以提供各勢力一個商業與外交的場所。 但是，似乎每一個規劃美好願景的計劃彷彿都收到詛咒一般，巴比倫計劃也不例外，自巴比倫一號（Babylon 1）建造起，都因為建造半途中遭到破壞而宣告失敗，但是人類並不氣餒，仍然努力建造Babylon 2以及Babylon 3，但仍逃不過厄運的詛咒，最後，人類傾全力建造了有史以來最大的太空站：巴比倫四號（Babylon 4）。但是很離奇的是，在巴比倫四號星站完工啟用後24小時便神秘消失在14星區（Ｓector 14）。 遭受到如此挫敗，此時的地球聯盟政府已經無力再負擔建造第五座太空站，所幸在明巴利星族政府大力支持與其他星際勢力的資助之下，人類在有限的預算下在愛普希隆星系的第三號行星（Epsilon 3）軌道上建造巴比倫五號星站（Babylon 5），並於2257年完工運轉，2258年正式對外開放。 該站的首任指揮官是很多將校級軍官積極爭取的，而地球聯盟也規劃許多人選，這其中包括戰爭期間的戰爭英雄薛瑞登上校（Captain John Sheridan），但是，因為巴比倫五號星站的主要出資者為明巴利人，在明巴利人強烈也是唯一堅持不二的人選下，傑夫辛克萊中校（Commander Jeffrey Sinclair）成為第一任的星站指揮官，雖然這個決定在地球聯盟軍方高層引起不小的反彈與質疑.
